"Financed by the MCIN with funds from the European Union-NextGenerationEU (PRTR-C17.I1) and by the Generalitat de Catalunya" Plan de Recuperación, Transformación y Resiliencia - Financiado por la Unión Europea - NextGenerationEU.

The mission of the Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICN2) is to achieve the highest level of scientific and technological excellence in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. Its research lines focus on the newly-discovered physical and chemical properties that arise from the behaviour of matter at the nanoscale. ICN2 has been awarded with the Severo Ochoa Center of Excellence distinction for three consecutive periods (2014-2018 and 2018-2022 and 2023-2026). ICN2 comprises 20 Research Groups, 7 Technical Development and Support Units and Facilities, and 2 Research Platforms, covering different areas of nanoscience and nanotechnology.

Job Title: Scientist TEM

Research area or group: Advanced Electron Nanoscopy (GAeN)

Description of Group/Project: The candidate will work at the ICN2 and the ALBA Synchrotron developing correlative (S)TEM in-situ experiments on catalysts, from SACs to multiple types of nanostructures. This position is linked to the In-CAEM project, coordinated by Prof. Jordi Arbiol, which is part of the Joint Electron Microscopy Center at ALBA (JEMCA). The objective is to enable correlative in-situ (S)TEM and Synchrotron Radiation (SR) experiments for addressing some of the scientific challenges of the European Green Deal plan, to promote a more sustainable EU economy.

The In-situ Correlative Facility for Advanced Energy Materials (In-CAEM), is envisioned as a key tool to tackle advanced characterization challenges, down to the atomic scale, of Advanced Materials analysed under working conditions/in-situ/operando, and under selected gas or liquid conditions.

Main Tasks and responsibilities: During the 2 years contract the hired scientist will be in charge of the new EM equipment at the ALBA Synchrotron and help on the commissioning and design of the future in-situ TEM infrastructure related to In-CAEM. The main tasks will be: 1) Help on preparing the public tenders of the new equipment. 2) Work on the already existing advanced STEM and FIB equipment for the analysis of energy nanomaterials for catalysis and energy applications. 3) Design in-situ experiments with the available gas and liquid TEM sample holders. 4) Train students and younger postdocs on in-situ TEM. 5) Carry out in-situ experiments from the project partners materials and samples.

Requirements:

  • Education: PhD in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, Nanotechnology or equivalent
  • Knowledge and experience: More than 4 years postdoc experience related to (S)TEM, EM related spectroscopies, 4D-STEM and in-situ techniques (use of gas, liquid, bias and/or heating TEM sample holders).
  • Personal Competences: Proficiency in English, and demonstrated skills in oral and written communication

Summary of conditions:

  • Full time work (37,5h/week)
  • Contract Length: 21 months
  • Location: Bellaterra (Barcelona)
  • Salary will depend on qualifications and demonstrated experience.
  • Support to the relocation issues.
  • Life Insurance.

Estimated Incorporation date: 01/09/2023

How to apply:

All applications must be made via the ICN2 website ... and include the following:

  1. A cover letter.
  2. A full CV including contact details.
  3. 2 Reference letters or referee contacts.

Deadline for applications: May 17, 2023
