Postdoctoral Researcher on quantum transduction in van der Waals heterostructures

Back

The mission of the Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICN2) is to achieve the highest level of scientific and technological excellence in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. Its research lines focus on the newly-discovered physical and chemical properties that arise from the behaviour of matter at the nanoscale. ICN2 has been awarded with the Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence distinction for two consecutive periods (2014-2018 and 2018-2022). ICN2 comprises 19 Research Groups, 7 Technical Development and Support Units and Facilities, and 2 Research Platforms, covering different areas of nanoscience and nanotechnology.

Job Title: Postdoctoral Researcher on quantum transduction in van der Waals heterostructures

Research area or group: Physics and Engineering of Nanodevices

Description of Group/Project:

The groups of Sergio O. Valenzuela and Klaas-Jan Tielrooij at the Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICN2) are offering a joint postdoctoral position in the field of quantum transduction, within the newly created ICN2 Quantum Synergy Laboratory* (QSL).

The ICN2 research lines focus on the newly-discovered physical and chemical properties that arise from the behavior of matter at the nanoscale. Following the interest of several ICN2 groups working on quantum materials, the Joint Quantum Synergy Laboratory (QSL) is being set-up with the goal of promoting collaborative projects, which take advantage of the groups' highly complementary expertise. Advanced equipment will be available, such as cryostats with optical and electrical access in combination with (high) magnetic fields.

Main Tasks and responsibilities:

The project focuses on developing quantum devices that harness the potential of topological and quantum materials, to enable novel processes for the transduction and transfer of information. The devices will combine the use of light- and spin-degrees of freedom. More specifically, the postdoctoral fellow will explore the generation of excitons in transition metal dichalcogenides in connection to the transfer and monitoring of spin information in graphene.

S/he will design and prepare the devices using ICN2 nanofabrication facilities and will carry out optical and transport measurements at cryogenic temperatures, while participating in a established collaboration with the ICN2 theory group of Stephan Roche.

Requirements:

  • Education:

The selected candidate will be an experimentalist with a PhD. in Physics, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.

  • Professional Experience:

Knowledge on low-temperature and high-frequency experiments and on manipulation of 2D materials, spintronics and/or excitons in transition metal dichalcogenides will be highly valued.

Proficiency level of English.

Summary of conditions:

  • Full time work (37,5h/week)
  • Contract Length: Temporary (2 years)
  • Location: Bellaterra (Barcelona)
  • Salary will depend on qualifications and demonstrated experience.
  • Support to the relocation issues.
  • Life Insurance.
  • Flexible working time
  • Teleworking option

Estimated Incorporation date: as soon as possible (before 31/12/2022)

How to apply:

All applications must be made via the ICN2 website and include the following:

  1. A cover letter.
  2. A full CV including contact details.
  3. 2 Reference letters or referee contacts.

Please, attach a "blind" Curriculum (without any personal information, such as name, date of birth, nationality, gender or photography)

Applications will be continuously reviewed. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for interview.
