The mission of the Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICN2) is to achieve the highest level of scientific and technological excellence in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. Its research lines focus on the newly-discovered physical and chemical properties that arise from the behavior of matter at the nanoscale. ICN2 has been awarded the Severo Ochoa Center of Excellence distinction for two consecutive periods (2014-2018 and 2018-2022). ICN2 comprises 19 Research Groups, 7 Technical Development and Support Units and Facilities, and 2 Research Platforms, covering different areas of nanoscience and nanotechnology.

Job Title: Postdoctoral Researcher

Research area or group: Oxide Nanoelectronics Group

Description of Group/Project:

The Oxide Nanophysics group has an intense activity on the use of atomic force microscopy techniques to probe and map functionalities at the nanoscale. The present offer is to take a leading role in our AFM lab, with a specific aim to explore the temperature dependence of piezoresponse in ferroelectric and antiferroelectric thin films, as part of our commitment to an EU-funded project (TSAR) centered on topological structures (such as domain walls) in antiferroics.

Main Tasks and responsibilities:

The chosen candidate will become the scientific and technical manager of our AFM facilities.

On the managerial side, he/she will ensure that the AFM lab has a constant stock of cantilevers, that eventual repairs are dealt with, and that other users of the facility are properly trained.

In addition, it is expected that the candidate will attempt to set up and run our cryogenic AFM facility (Attocube).

On the scientific side, tasks will include:

Design and execution of experiments for mapping functional responses of oxides, in particular piezoresponse of domains and conductivity of domain walls, as well as nanomechanical properties.

The rationalization and presentation of results in meetings.

The discussion of ideas with the group leader and other members the team.

The writing of scientific papers.

The candidate will also have freedom to also pursue his/her own ideas and establish independent collaborations -this will in fact be encouraged.

Education, Experience, Knowledge and Competences required:

· Education

  • BSc and PhD in Physics are mandatory.

· Professional Experience

  • The candidate must also demonstrate experience and expertise in ferroelectrics and in atomic force microscopy, in particular contact modes such as piezoresponse force microscopy or conductivity-AFM.
  • Expertise in nanomechanics is not essential but highly desirable.
  • Experience in supervising students and/or managing AFM facilities will also be highly valued.
  • Good comand of English and scientific communication skills are expected.
